"I AM who I AM" - God as present.
http://pubtheologian.wordpress.com/2010/09/30/the-divine-present/
We are people of the past. We never experience the right now, only the past. Sitting in Kenya, we watched the stars every night. Those stars were millions of years old, and we were only seeing them now. We watch "live TV," knowing that there is a delay of a few minutes between the event and the moment we see them. God is not stuck seconds or years in the past. God is present. Check out the link above to read a commentary from JTS posted by a friend of mine- Bryan Berghoef (pastor at Watershed in TC). Andy, Good morning!!! To "heady" for me. I'll look forward to you helping me understand on Thursday. Steve
ReplyDeleteGood morning! Here is how I see it:
ReplyDeleteDuring the Ridder Leadership Initiative, one of Jim's favorite phrases is "Get present to..." What Jim is alluding to is that there is a lot going on in our world, both inside our minds and in our environments, that we do not see or notice. When he wants us to get present, he wants us to focus our minds only on one thing. It is a very difficult thing to do.
When Moses encountered I AM, he was immediately present to God and God alone. That kind of awareness doesn't happen every day, yet God is speaking every day. I take away from the post that there is great benefit from simply being aware of God.
Thanks.... That really helps.... I remember Sue Meserve leading worship one Sunday and talking about the benefit of closing your eyes as you pray to help block out all those environmental distractions, that still leaves our minds to deal with... Father help us to be totally focused on You in our whole being. Amen, Thanks again!!! Steve
